Looking out from Rich Mountain

The birth of the Elkins IRLP

This summer, Maurice G. Brown II (AB8E), Zane Hammack (WV8ZH) and Jason Bailey (KD8JCS) devised a plan to launch an Elkins IRLP node.  They wanted to provide this service to West Virginia hams in order to globally link them with other hams.  AB8E furnished the IRLP hardware and valuable knowledge regarding IRLP fundamentals.

WV8ZH not only provided the commercial grade radio, but he offered his custom-made interfacing cable, critical to computer to radio communication, and provided a tower at Rich Mountain, a premium location for excellent coverage in the great state of West Virginia.  KD8JCS conducted the hardware assembly and the general programming and installation of LINUX-REDHAT software.  Bill Grindle (N8RLR) also provided valuable time and dedication to the installation. A view from the tower.

Elkins IRLP is pleased to announce that the SERA organization has granted us a coordinated UHF repeater frequency located at 442.100 (positive 5kHz offset). This repeater is now on the air and operational. As promised, it is complete with IRLP (use of IRLP requires registration see tab above) and autopatch for making phone calls. In order to bring up the autopatch, please use standard autopatch operating procedure by utilizing the * key, plus the phone number you're wanting to call. Then, follow with a brief mic key up after the phone number is read back to you by the repeater. To end the autopatch conversation, press the # key. Although our repeater controller is limited to exactly twenty preset area codes, upon request, we can add area codes to the repeaters directory in order to allow your particular long distance call to go through. Common area codes around the tri-state have already been added. Our future is still promising with the addition of echo-link and wires. Please use and enjoy our Elkins IRLP repeater!
